Rally to fix the buses on Fordham Road

  • Fordham Plaza The Bronx, NY, 10458 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us at Fordham Plaza on Tuesday, July 11 at 11am to rally with NYC Council Member Pierina Sanchez as we call on Mayor Adams to stand up for riders and deliver a new busway on Fordham Road!

When more than 85% people traveling on Fordham Rd do so via transit, transit should be the priority on the street! But right now, the 85,000 riders that depend on buses along Fordham Rd are stuck slogging through traffic on congested streets.

So, imagine the excitement when DOT proposed a new busway on Fordham Road. A new streetscape that would allow buses and emergency vehicles to travel freely and give riders confidence that their commutes will be reliable and consistent every day. It’s a dream come true!

But, due to a bit of pushback from a handful of wealthy, well-connected business owners and board members of local institutions, the busway has been stalled. That’s why riders are hitting the streets to make sure Mayor Adams and DOT follow through and deliver the busway we deserve!

Cut the Fare! Action + Outreach Day @ City Hall

This Wednesday, June 28, join us for a demonstration at City Hall to urge Mayor Adams to stop dragging his feet on cutting the fare for low-income New Yorkers. We’ll be there cutting the fare for riders one MetroCard at a time to urge Mayor Adams to #ExpandFairFares!

The cost of everything is going up, including rent for rent stabilized units and transit fares, which are due to rise to $2.90 this summer. That means low-income New Yorkers are about to get hit even harder by our city’s ongoing affordability emergency — and Mayor Adams needs to meet the moment with bold action to put more money into the pockets of working New Yorkers.

Right now, the Mayor has the power to fund an expansion of the Fair Fares program and cut transit costs in half for more than 1 million people. But, with the city budget due at the end of June and no indication that he intends to do that, we’re left with no choice but to pull up and show out to demand our Mayor rise to the occasion.

Rant + Rally for Mayor Adams to Cut the Fare!

Whether you’re struggling to afford the rising cost of living, know someone who is, or simply believe that every New Yorker—regardless of their income—has the right to travel, explore, and experience all our city has to offer, we all have a stake in the fight to #ExpandFairFares. This is especially true now, as MTA debates a new fare hike to $2.90 for later this year.

Mayor Adams has the power to cut transit costs in half for more than 1 million people. It’s time for him to act NOW. On Thursday, June 22, riders, advocates, and elected leaders are standing together at MTA Headquarters to implore Mayor Adams to expand the Fair Fares program and guarantee access to affordable transit for all New Yorkers.

Rally will start at 9:30am outside MTA HQ. Then, at 10:00am we will go inside to testify at the fare hike hearing.

Mayor Adams: Cut the Fare, Not the Budget!

As our city becomes less affordable for working New Yorkers, instead of cutting funding to social programs that provide crucial services and resources to people struggling to afford living in our city, Mayor Adams has the power to #ExpandFairFares and cut transit costs in half for more than 1M riders.

Join us at City Hall Subway Station (outside the R/W entrance) on Wednesday, June 7 from 10am-12pm to rally with riders, advocates, and elected leaders calling on Mayor Adams to act NOW for a more affordable, equitable city and utilize his power over the budget to cut costs for New Yorkers!

100 Riders Call Mayor Adams to #ExpandFairFares

Riders! With a new MTA fare hike on the way, one of the best ways Mayor Adams can put money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers this year is to #ExpandFairFares and cut transit costs in half for more than 1M riders.

We need to make sure the Mayor hears riders’ demand to #ExpandFairFares loud and clear. So let’s call him!

Join us on Thursday, June 1, at 125th St A/B/C/D Station from 4pm-7pm, where we’ll set up a phone booth to get at least 100 riders to call the Mayor. We’ll talk to riders about our push to #ExpandFairFares and invite riders to leave a message for the Mayor, send him an email, or record a video about why we need to make transit more affordable!

#ExpandFairFares Organizing Meeting

  • 150 Broadway, Suite 1005 New York, NY, 10038 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Fair Fares has made transit more affordable for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers since 2019 with half-priced MetroCards for those living at or below the federal poverty level, but can still do much more to help those struggling to afford their basic needs amidst the city’s ongoing affordability crisis.

Right now, the income threshold to qualify for Fair Fares stands at $14,580 for individuals and $30,000 for families of four. That leaves many New Yorkers who are working and living in poverty unable to benefit from Fair Fares.

Join us for an Organizing Meeting on Thursday, March 23 at Riders Alliance Office (or virtually, via Zoom) to prepare our campaign plan for this year’s city budget season to raise the income threshold for Fair Fares eligibility to cover families making up to $60,000 a year.
