It’s time to fix our broken subway system

Our subway system is crumbling and built with outdated technology. Riders are sick of dealing with daily delays, so we’re fighting for a new subway system that’s modern, accessible, and resilient to climate change.

Riders deserve a world-class subway system that connects us to everything the city has to offer.

What we’re fighting for

In 2019, we won congestion pricing, which will produce more than a billion dollars every year to modernize public transit in New York, and $15 billion in new funding for our transit system in the state budget.

Now, we need to hold the Governor and the MTA accountable to delivering a rapid and full implementation of Congestion Pricing to #FixtheSubway and make sure that these funds are put to work where they’re needed most, including new subway cars and buses, modern signal technology, repairs to stations, and more.

Why it matters

New York City’s subway system isn’t just iconic, it’s a huge part of what makes our city one of the most diverse, dynamic places in the country. Riders should be able to get to work or school easily from wherever they live, and access any and every place that makes New York special, from museums and restaurants to parks and libraries, without needing to own a car or spend a fortune on cabs.

But due to chronic disinvestment, our subways are riddled with century-old signals and crumbling infrastructure that cannot keep pace with the threat of climate change. Nearly every day, delays inconvenience riders on at least one line, if not many or even all of them. As a result, riders live in uncertainty, wondering whether we’ll get to work on time, or what kind of extreme conditions we might face on our commutes, from overcrowding to flooding to extreme heat.

To bring our subway system into the 21st century and ensure it can meet the needs of riders well into the next century, we need our elected leaders to take dramatic, innovative action. Instead of waiting for the next crisis to arrive on our doorstep, we need them to address the damage that’s already been done and invest in improvements simultaneously.

“Once congestion pricing goes into effect, every New Yorker is going to wonder how we lived without it. By fairly funding transit, we’ll equalize how the wealthy and working class get around.”
